The Indian diaspora in New South Wales and South Australia

The Indian community in New South Wales (NSW) and South Australia accounts for about 38% of Indian Diaspora in Australia numbering roughly 175,000. There are 58 registered Indian associations and 11 cultural organisations in NSW and 06 registered Indian associations/organisations in South Australia. Prominent among these are - United Indian Association (UIA) which is an umbrella organisation representing around 25 NSW based Indian regional/linguistic associations and Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO). There are other religion-based, language-based, alumni-based organisations including Hindu Council of Australia - an umbrella organisation representing various Hindu associations, Sikh Council of Australia – an umbrella body representing Sikh community, Punjabi Council of Australia, IITians Association of Australia, Aus-Ind Graduate Medical Association, Gujarati Samaj of NSW, Bengali Association of NSW, Youth Associations etc. These Indian associations have been instrumental in organising various cultural and other events and therefore play constructive role in the promotion of Indian Culture.

There are eight Sikh temples in NSW prominent among which are Gurdwara Sahib Glenwood/Parklea, Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Revesby and Guru Nanak Foundation Gurudwara Turramurra, Sydney. There are more than 18 Hindu or other religious temples prominent among which are Sri Mandir - Auburn, Sri Venkateswara temple – Helensburgh and Sri Karphaga Vinayaker temple at Homebush West. All major Indian festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Durga Puja, Ganesh Chaturthi etc. are celebrated on large scale by the Indian Diaspora. The Diwali celebrations organised by Hindu Council in 2016 was attended by more than 20000 people.

Over 19000 Indian students (16000 in NSW and 3200 in South Australia) are pursuing higher studies in University of Sydney, University of New South Wales, Macquaire, University of Wollongong, UTS, University of South Australia, TAFEs etc.
