Alkane Resources has found new prospects at its Tomingley gold operation in central New South Wales.

Alkane Resources has found new prospects at its Tomingley gold operation in central New South Wales, aiming to extend the mine life by adding to its resource inventory. Recent drilling has identified new andesite targets and significant mineralisation at the El Paso prospect, with key results including 12m at 1.50g/t gold and 3m at 1.49g/t gold. Exploration at the Plains prospect has confirmed the continuity of gold-bearing structures, and regional aircore drilling has uncovered new gold zones. Alkane has also completed an airborne gradiometry survey, identifying new structures and the possibility of a new volcanic belt. The company is seeking to add further mine life, scale, and grade to Tomingley.

NSW Aurelia Metals, Federation mine in New South Wales, is set to open, marking the start of critical minerals mining in the region.

Aurelia Metals' Federation mine, located in the Cobar Basin of New South Wales, is set to open, marking the start of critical minerals mining in the region. The mine, discovered in 2019 and approved for operations until 2036, will produce high-grade zinc, lead, gold, and copper, essential for the global energy transition. Over an initial eight-year mine life, Federation mine is projected to produce up to 600,000 tonnes per annum, with an initial production target of four million tonnes of ore. The mine is expected to create more than 140 skilled jobs, provide a $143 million investment for the local community, and contribute $74 million in royalties over its initial mine life.

Federation mine on track for first ore

Aurelia Metals is preparing to commence production of the first ore from its Federation zinc, lead, and gold deposit in New South Wales, just 10km south of its Hera site. The Federation deposit was initially discovered in 2019, and development by Aurelia began shortly after. In 2021, a mineral resource estimate was released, indicating the site's potential as a high-grade resource.

NSW confirms Eraring closure delay driven by fear of pre-election price shocks

The NSW state Labor government has confirmed that its controversial decision to delay the closure of the country’s biggest coal fired power generator at Eraring was primarily driven by concerns over a possible jump in wholesale electricity prices. The 2.88 gigawatt (GW) Eraring facility on the central coast was due to close on August, 2025, but under an underwriting deal with the state government which could be worth up to $450 million, Origin Energy will now keep at least two units open until August, 2027, a few months after the next state election.

Record mining revenue helps NSW Budget undermined by GST rip-off

An increase in mining royalty revenues, driven by higher coal exports and royalty rates, is helping the NSW Government manage a Budget undermined by the country’s GST reduction. The NSW Government is dealing with a $12 billion decrease in GST revenues from the Federal govt compared to the 2023-24 half-yearly budget review. At the same time, mining royalties are forecasted to deliver $13.3 billion to the NSW government over the next four years, an increase of $481 million from previous estimates.

More critical minerals identified in NSW

The New South Wales (NSW) government conducted a survey to identify critical minerals for developing better understanding of the state's geological properties and groundwater supplies. NSW currently has deposits of 21 of the 31 nationally identified critical minerals, as well as occurrences of all five minerals on the Federal Government's Strategic Minerals List. The survey has highlighted several areas for further exploration, including Forbes, Dubbo, Cobar, and Yathong regions.

The plan for the "largest ever" coalmine in NSW is expected to exert pressure on the state's net zero target.

The plan for the 'largest ever' coal mine in NSW is expected to increase pressure on the state's net zero target. The NSW environment regulator has raised concerns about the plan to extend the life of a Hunter Valley coal-mining complex until 2050, calling it the "largest coal-mining proposal ever put forward" in the state. This decision to extend the life has been criticized as "deeply disappointing" by green groups.
